When we left Summit Travel Agency in Zabljak, the owner, Anna had given us much more that just two tickets for a rafting trip. As an experienced travel agent, she provided us with tips and insights for all of Montenegro. One of them, and for sure the best, was the trip around the Durmitor Mountains.

The tour starts in Zabljak, heading southwest. The road wind up slowly and passes beautiful plateaus with green meadows, scenic views on mountain ranges and small villages. You cross some passes, one called “sedlo” (saddle) – with good reason as you can see here.

The road is quite narrow but in good condition and easy to drive. After the first half you can take an unpaved road down to the Pivsko lake. On our trip, the only difficult part of this road was when huge digger passed us in the opposite direction on a narrow and steep part. But centimeter by centimeter we managed to pass each other. The reward was a great view down to the blue lake. It is a reservoir, the biggest in Montenegro, fed by Piva River.

After crossing the bridge you can visit Pivski monastery, as we did regarding Anna’s advice. The monastery was moved during a period of ten years stone by stone to make way for the reservoir lake.
The way back on the northern road crosses the village Trsa just at the edge of a deep canyon. Here, you meet the paved road again, that we had left for the unpaved section. The road parallels Piva Canyon and through a more wooded landscape. Eventually, you will pass by Lake Sušičko. Be sure not to miss it. It’s pristine beauty makes it a perfect spot for lunch.

After about six hours, you arrive back in Zabljak – surely, with great impressions from this side of the country.
