We will give you the good news right away. Overlanding Bulgaria can be done a lot cheaper than we did! But how did our costs of overlanding Bulgaria sum up to an astonishing 48,38 € daily and hence place Bulgaria at the expensive end on our list of countries?
First of all, these 48,38 € a day are the combined costs for two people but do not include costs for vehicle maintenance and repairs, equipment we bought along the way, shipping and flights as those cannot be attributed to one single country. On average, we have spent an additional 27.18 € per day in these categories.
Here is what we spent on an average of the eight days we stayed in Bulgaria:
The graph almost makes further explanations obsolete. We will give it to you anyway. The sole reason we crossed the border into Bulgaria was the need for a cheap camp ground with wifi on the way from Greece to Turkey. Prices for accommodation in these two countries are easily three times as high as in Bulgaria during the main tourist season.
We stayed in a very nice campground with top-notch amenities for six out of seven nights. One night we spent at the cool monument of Buzludzha with our new friends.
At the time of our visit, fuel was much cheaper in Bulgaria than it was in Turkey. So we left the country with full tanks of diesel, which explains that share.
Food, both groceries and restaurants, are very cheap in Bulgaria. As you can see, we only spent 4 € a day for feeding the two of us!
If you manage to wild camp a lot and take your time, Bulgaria will turn out a very affordable country to travel. It has an interesting history with several bits of soviet brutalist architecture to prove, nice and welcoming people and tasty food on offer!
For comparison, we have included the graph showing our daily average expenses of the whole trip below.
