If you travel to eastern Turkey don’t miss to visit the archaeological site of Ani. It is located next to the border to Armenia, and close to the recently new opened border crossing to Katsakhi in Georgia.
This ruined city was once the capital of Armenia but has been abandoned for more than three centuries. Since the Turkey-Armenia War in the 1920s, the region belongs to Turkey.
The so called Ghost City is a great place to explore. But be aware of the hot and dry climate here in summer.
In a huge area, you can still find many (of course mainly ruined) buildings, e.g. a cathedral and part of the city walls. Even today, these are really impressive and more than worth to visit.
