Baku – the stunning oil capital

Baku – the stunning oil capital

Baku was one of the reasons, we decided to take the risk and leave Willie behind in Georgia. We had been looking forward to visit this city for a while and did not want to miss it.

If you travel to Eastern Turkey don’t miss to visit the archaeological site of Ani. It is located next to the border to Armenia, and close to the recently new opened border crossing to Katsakhi in Georgia.
This ruined city was once the capital of Armenia but has been abandoned for more than three centuries. Since the Turkey-Armenia War in the 1920s, the region belongs to Turkey.
The so called Ghost City is a great place to explore. But be aware of the hot and dry climate here in summer.

Istanbul – a city with many faces!

Istanbul – a city with many faces!

Istanbul, although it is not Turkey’s capital, is one of the busiest and most multifaceted cities we have been so far. We liked the historic districts, the big and smaller mosques, the lively bazaars and the young and modern corners. We enjoyed the time with our couchsurfing host Aziz, his great breakfast and the cai at his friend’s cafe.
Thanks to Aziz’ timing plan, we could explore almost every must-see site of Istanbul during our four day stay there.
We never felt unsafe although we noticed the lack of foreign tourists and the presence of police everywhere.

In central Greece, one of the main attraction is the site of Meteora. Here, there are great rock formations caused by different geological phenomena. But this is not enough. Already in the 9th century AD, monks started building monasteries on top of these rocks. Nowadays, six monasteries still remain.
